Upgrades, innovations and new technologies arrive to take productivity to the next level

Yamaha Motor Intelligent Machines has introduced new productivity-boosting innovations to the world’s electronic industry at Productronica 2015 in Munich.

The new 5Mpixel YSi-V inline optical inspection system launched at the show brings sophisticated quality control within the reach of smaller manufacturers or for cost-sensitive projects. Yamaha is offering a choice of 2D-only and 2D/3D configurations with 5 or 12 MPixel camera that allow customers to choose their entry level. Each has a wide field of view and benefits from the same signal-processing control system, multiple inspection modes and dual-lane chassis as the flagship 12Mpixel system. The 5 MPixel camera with 18-micron resolution allows these new systems to deliver high-performance defect detection and capture detailed images from four different angles to guide rework.

Also making its debut at Productronica, Yamaha’s new ZS Auto-Load feeders eliminate laborious splicing and end-of-tape errors maximizing line efficiency to the next level. The component reel is changed quickly and easily without withdrawing the feeder, simply by inserting the new tape at the rear. Built-in self-calibration ensures correct tape positioning for consistent picking accuracy, ensuring no components are wasted. By cutting the cover tape, instead of separating, ZS Auto-Load minimises electrostatic effects to ensure components stay correctly positioned. Emptied tape is sliced for easy disposal. The new feeders are compatible with all Yamaha YS and YSM mounters, and not only streamline high-volume assembly but also simplify small-batch or prototype builds where components are presented in short lengths of tape.

In addition, Yamaha has further extended the set of mobile productivity tools that deliver critical information to operators wherever they are on the factory floor. The new Mobile Parts-Remaining counter confirms at-a-glance the number of components in any given feeder, via the Windows® 7 handheld computer supplied with all Yamaha mounters.

Visitors facing high-volume/low-mix production challenges were able to see the latest Sigma mounters, which now incorporate new Yamaha engineering since the company took over the brand from Hitachi early in 2015. The Sigma machines are fully integrated within Yamaha’s total-line solution, and achieve high cph rates of up to 75,000 on the Sigma G5S that features two beams and two heads. The Sigma F8 has four beams and four heads, and delivers 150,000 cph. With their Direct Drive Heads the Sigma machines support a wide range of components from 03015 chips up to 72mm x 72mm or 150mm x 26mm and 35mm high. Support for advanced feeding solutions and options such as heads for odd-shape components maximize flexibility to satisfy diverse production needs.

Robots on the Yamaha booth demonstrated real solutions to challenges facing today’s electronics manufacturers, such as high-speed dispensing of gaskets or thermal materials in complex patterns.

Yamaha demonstrated its latest technologies – such as 5Mpixel entry-level AOI and ZS Auto-Load feeders – to large numbers of booth visitors and VIP guests every day during Productronica 2015.

Also Introducing: Robots to Solve Real Production Challenges

Leading the drive toward next-generation electronics manufacturing leveraging robotic technologies, Yamaha also unveiled programmable SCARA and Cartesian robot systems for picking bulk components, palletizing ICs, and accurately dispensing form-in-place thermal materials and gaskets at high speed. Yamaha’s IM Robot Division has extensive experience in factory automation across industries such as packaging, automotive and precision manufacturing, and is now applying its skills to solve emerging challenges in the electronics assembly arena. The systems introduced at Productronica are fully integrated and ready to install and program on the production line.

“2015 has delivered our most successful Productronica ever,” said Mr. Ichiro Arimoto. “We welcomed many invited VIPs and started new conversations with visitors that we look forward to continuing and ultimately helping overcome their production challenges. With our high efficient Total Line Solutions, alongside our commitment to delivering the most advanced technologies, our controlled cost-of-ownership plan fixes maintenance costs at a low level during the economical life time of each machine to give customers the best possible peace of mind. This is a powerful proposition that is helping us expand our customer base quickly throughout Europe.”
